Yet it intrigued me almost immediately and helped me familiarize myself with the sport. The main factor that allows it to achieve this effect was the likable and hilarious characters. They're all weird, goofy, and funny, yet not annoying like many other manga characters. Seeing them interacting with each other is really cute and heart-warming.

I also like how the teams all have fun an distinctive themes that they base their plays around, since it makes every game more memorable. These strong points are mostly retained in the anime, though I feel the Japanese voice-over is too tame for some of the larger-than-life characters like Hiruma. However, my main complaint is about the art quality. The original manga has its art done by Yusuke Murata also known for One Punch Man , a manga artist that I personally think is the best currently, yet this series doesn't really show his brilliance.

He then learns his team is facing them in a practice game. The practice game against Zokugaku kicks off. Monta gets off to a fast start after Habashira tells the Chameleons to focus on containing Eyeshield Monta takes a beating when Hiruma stubbornly refuses to change strategy. Hiruma decides to hold a physically demanding tryout at Tokyo Tower.

Kurita is accused of destroying the decorations in a shopping district. Afraid the team will be barred from entering a tournament, he decides to quit. The Devil Bats hold a barbeque, but Hiruma makes them earn their meat by learning passing routes. Two mysterious men show up and crash their training. Hiruma enters a lottery to play an American team visiting Japan, but he suspects it is rigged. The team takes on the Taiyo Sphinx. Kurita loses confidence when he suffers the greatest humiliation a lineman can face: being knocked on his back.

The Devil Bats impress with their spirited play as they put up a good fight against the Sphinx. They enter halftime trailing by a single point.

The Devil Bats struggle to score as Kamaguruma keeps shutting down Monta. Despite their offensive difficulties, Hiruma refuses to change strategy.

Panther accompanies his team to Japan, hoping to go up against Eyeshield Sena plays with more intensity against the Aliens, hoping that their coach will put Panther in the game if the Devil Bats build a big enough lead.

Panther easily gets past Sena and scores a touchdown on his first play of the game. The revitalized Aliens dominate once more as they pull ahead. Cerberus goes missing when a little girl mistakes him for her stuffed toy. Lost on the streets of Houston, Sena and Monta stumble across a neighborhood football game.

The locals spot them and ask them to join the action. The Devil Bats stop at a ranch with the Wild Gunmen to stay overnight and train. Doburoku tells Sena he has a fatal flaw in his running style. Kuroki and Togano plan their escape as the grueling death march takes its toll. However, Jumonji remains committed and declares his desire to change. Sena gets separated from the team while chasing after his rock. He runs into Suzuna, who says she has come to America to search for her brother. Sena participates in a scrimmage to help Taki achieve his dream of becoming a pro football player.

But two burly opponents have it out for them. Suzuna and Taki join the team on the death march. Yukimitsu reaches his limit and collapses from exhaustion, but Hiruma says to leave him behind. The Devil Bats make it to the final stretch of the march. Determined to reach their goal, they push on — until their truck gets stuck in a pothole.
